Free AudioBook! Flavia's Secret, by Lindsay Townsend

We're giving away one digital audiobook version of Flavia's Secret, by Lindsay Townsend!

The price of Flavia's freedom may be her death.
A slave in Roman-controlled Aquae Sulis (modern Bath), Flavia knows her tender-hearted mistress meant to free her and her other slaves, but when she passes away suddenly, the chance for freedom looks like it's slipping away.
Flavia takes matters into her own hands. As a scribe, it's easy for her to forge a note in her mistress' hand.
But when a new master arrives, Marcus Brucetus, a charismatic, widowed officer toughened in the forests of Germania, Flavia is afraid she's gone too far. If her deception is found out, all the slaves may die.
When Marcus Brucetus takes over the villa, the last thing he expects is to fall in love with a slave. Still mourning his wife and daughter, he has too much respect for himself and for Flavia to force himself on her. He must free the scribe, as her deceased owner wished, but as the wild mid-winter festival of Saturnalia approaches, and a new danger lurks, he finds it increasingly hard to let her go.
If he does, will she freely choose to stay with him? Or will she be stolen away from him before she can even make the choice?

A Latin Love-Affair

I`m a sucker for historical romances, and I`m an even bigger sucker for anything to do with ancient Rome. I studied Latin for four years in high school, another year at my university, and then tortured my own kids with it for years when we homeschooled. So when Lindsay Townsend submitted Flavia`s Secret for consideration, I had to have it.

Flavia`s Secret is the story of a young woman who lives in Aquae Sulis, the Roman name for what is now the English town of Bath. While Bath generally conjures up images of Regency men and women "taking the waters" and promenading around town, even back in Roman times its healing powers of the waters were well known. Romans occupied much of Britain for centuries, until finally withdrawing from the island in the early 400s when multiple Barbarian invasions closer to home made it necessary to retrench its military forces. Towns like Aquae Sulis hosted a variety of Roman soldiers, bureaucrats and tradespeople, mixed in with its native British occupants. It would have been a lively mix of cultures.

Flavia is a scribe, a slave owned by Lady Valeria, who has promised to free her and her other household slaves in the future. When Lady Valeria dies suddenly, Flavia takes a chance and forges a note detailing Valeria's intentions to free the slaves. Then their new master, Marcus Brucetus arrives to take over and Flavia fears for her life if her deception is discovered.

In Flavia's day, slaves were common among almost every society, and while conditions could, and often were, horrific for slaves, slavery wasn't necessarily a permanent thing. Slaves might be freed as a reward for years of service, or if a master fell in love with one of them and wished to make her a wife (or less frequently, a husband). Sometimes slaves were able to earn money on the side and eventually buy their freedom. It took courage to make the transition from slave to freed-man or -woman; in such a stratified society it was especially difficult for a woman to make a new place for herself.

Flavia's Secret shows some of the difficulties facing a young woman without status in Roman society. Easy prey for any upper-class man, she must use all her wits to keep safe. Faced with a handsome master who may or may not be able to see past his mourning for his wife to make room in his heart for a new love, she must be very careful that she's not exchanging one type of prison for another.

I hope you'll give Flavia's Secret a try. Click here for more information or to purchase!
